Reasons for Constipation

Constipation is a condition or symptom which may not have a single defined way to describe. What may be called a constipation for one person may not totally apply to another person. But usually hard painful stool can be called as constipation. Research shows that there can be different reasons for constipation.

Adapting to a different Lifestyle

All races of human beings are more adapted to the lifestyle and food habits which are suitable for their climatic conditions. When people migrate to another country or region which has a different culture, climate and food habits and try to adapt to those conditions it leads to many problem including constipation.

For example, black Africans in USA are more prone to constipation. Similarly for hot climatic conditions like India alcohol and non vegetarian food are not that suitable as compared to cold countries.

Lethargic Lifestyle


Most city people have a sedentary lifestyle working the entire day sitting on the chair. Due to this the intestines becomes less active. There is less blood flow to the vital organs which make reduces the efficiency of all organs.

Lack of Exercise

This is an extension of previous point where in due to lack of exercise the entire body and all the organs work less optimally. If nothing else at least an evening walk can be included after the dinner.

Bad Food Habits

Now a days we have developed a taste for refined foods like bread, biscuits and cakes etc. These food do not have the necessary fibers. Consuming non vegetarian food in too frequently also is harmful as they contain mainly protein an do not contain the fibers. For the body protein is the most difficult food to digest and it puts more pressure on the digestive system. In case you consume non vegetarian food ensure that you undergo proper exercise.

Also it is advisable to take food as per the weather and the local climatic conditions. Taking around 4 to 5 liters of water every day is really essential for keeping the entire body healthy including the digestive system.

Western Toilets

Western toilets are convenient but they are not good for elimination of the stool. The rectum muscles should be relaxed during stool elimination, but when you sit on the western toilets the rectum muscles are stretched. Sitting in natural position is more beneficial.

Postponing the Urge

Many time people are ashamed to use toilets when they are at someone else's place and postpone going using the toilets. When you do that the stool gradually looses the moisture and become harder. Some people do not like going to toilet as they do not like it. These habits also lead to constipation.
